What is a Transponder Key? - Lok Out Shop

Transponder is short for transmitter and responder. Therefore, transponder keys contain an electronic microchip built into the head by the manufacturer. Microchip is designed to transmit low-level signals to remote receivers installed in the car. Each chip built into the key has a unique serial number that must be recognized by the car's RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) before it can be unlocked or started. Almost all car manufacturers today have adopted the use of transponder keys to reduce auto thefts. And the good news is that since its introduction by GM on the 1985 Corvette car model, car thefts have dropped drastically.
