How Does Car key Programming Works?
Modern car keys are a small radio transmitter. The key works by transmitting a code to a receiver in your car that will open the doors when the correct code is received. The transmitter (key) and receiver (car) must be synchronized. If your key is damaged, it may not be able to signal to your car and you may be locked out. A locksmith can program a replacement key for you. Here's how car programming works.
A Brief History of Car Door Locks
Older readers of this blog may remember a time when locking or unlocking a car involved moving around the vehicle, putting a key in each door. There was a brief period then when power-locking – locking all four doors with a single turn of a key in the driver's door – was the dominant technology. Eventually, with the almost universal take-up of transponder keys, we were able to unlock all the doors in our car at the touch of a button on a key fob. The next phase is already being rolled out – some carmakers are doing away with that tedious button-pressing and unlocking car doors and triggering the ignition whenever transponders are in range.
Initial Remote Access Key
Remote entry transponder keys have been around for decades. But the security on them has been greatly improved. Early versions were as common as garage door openers in the 1950s and 60s. The shortcoming of this early remote system was that all doors operated on the same code. If you have the same remote as your neighbor, you will be able to open their door.
Modern Remote Access Key
Modern car keys are far more secure, they randomly choose between nearly a trillion possible codes. That's why it's important to have your car key and receiver together. The receiver will unlock the car only when it is receiving the signal it is expecting. This is a very safe way to make sure someone else's keys won't open your car. However, if you damage your key, you may need to replace it yourself.
